Despite a couple of recent loses, Manny Pacquiao is still perhaps the most loved and respected fighter still around in boxing, and one of the most admired of all time. He was chosen as ‘fighter of the decade’ for the 2000s by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA), the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and the World Boxing Council (WBC) and is the only man ever to have won world titles in eight different weight classes.
When the legendary Filipino steps into the ring to fight Texan Brandon Rios on November 23rd in Macau, China – he will know that it is maybe his last fight. If he loses, it would be hard to imagine that he would continue fighting into further contests. And Pacquiao’ss trainer Freddie Roach agrees. Roach said ‘If he loses, I will tell him to retire. If you lose three in a row it’s your time.’ Roach also said that it is his ‘job to protect him.’ Meanwhile for Brandon Rios – this is an opportunity to propel himself into boxing’s big time in front of a packed Chinese crowd.
A note on the Pacquiao vs Rios fight date: The fight date in China itself is actually November 24th.
